For seven years I was a Software Engineer at one of the largest legal answering services in the country, handling intake for hundreds of law firms nationwide. I built the intake platforms, the CRM integrations, and the reporting systems that thousands of daily intake records flowed through. Filevine, Clio, SmartAdvocate, Salesforce: I built those pipelines and watched the data move through them in real time.
The part that shaped everything came from a cubicle.
There was no spare office when I joined, so I took a desk on the call center floor. For months I worked ten feet from agents taking live calls for some of the largest PI firms in the country. I couldn't hear the callers. But I heard everything else. Agents working through calls where a family had just lost someone and needed a lawyer. There was something called a Quiet Room, a place agents could go to regroup after a difficult call. I learned quickly why it existed.
